Multiplayer supports up to 6 people.
NerveLabs states that multiplayer supports up to six people. Update 16 lets guests bring an existing character into a friend's world and saves that character every 30 seconds; quests and quest items remain with the host.

The exact local-only player cap is not stated.
Character progress saves independently every 30 seconds.
How Update 16 guest characters work
A guest can bring an existing single-player character into a friend's game, and guest progress saves to that chosen slot every 30 seconds.
- Create and save a single-player character before joining.
- Choose that save when joining a friend.
- Your appearance, equipment, regular items, gold, skills and perks travel with the character.
- Guest character progress writes back every 30 seconds, separate from the host's world saves.
Quests and quest items do not move to the guest slot; they remain part of the host's world.
How many players can play together?
NerveLabs says multiplayer supports up to 6 people. That is the clearest developer-published maximum for multiplayer and is the number to use when planning an online group.
Hotfix 5 explicitly includes split-screen in its hit-marker update, confirming that split-screen play is supported. The official post does not divide the six-person maximum into separate online, local or mixed caps, so this page does not claim a different split-screen limit.

What Update 16 does not transfer
The store says players make consequential choices together, but it does not define host authority, client quest credit, save ownership, loot rules or what happens when partners choose different dialogue options. Do not assume that host tracking also answers those separate rules.
For a new co-op session, update both players to the same current build before diagnosing save or quest behavior.
